Why choose the classic 5-day Inca Trail?

You should choose this 5-day tour because it?s the "premium" version in terms of pace and scenery. Unlike the classic 4-day trek, which is always rushed, this route lets you camp at less crowded spots and enjoy the ruins at a relaxed pace. Day 3 is the toughest with Dead Woman's Pass, but by splitting the distance, you arrive at Machu Picchu with much more energy and less fatigue. It?s perfect if you love photography and want to truly connect with nature without feeling like you're in a race against the clock.

Packing List (What to Bring)

Recommended gear and apparel checklist from our mountain guides.

Recommended Packing List: Classic Inca Trail (5 Days)

Luggage limits on the Inca Trail are strictly regulated to protect the historical path and ensure the well-being of the porters. A "layering system" is essential to manage the drastic temperature changes, from the heat of the Urubamba Valley to the freezing winds of Warmiwa?usqa (Dead Woman?s Pass) at 4,200 m.

WHAT TO PACK?

Documents and personal necessities
  • Your genuine passport: it?s compulsory. That actual paper from your reservation is what you have to carry through all the government checks.
  • Ready cash: bring it in smaller bills (Peruvian soles) if you plan to give tips to your porters or guides, or for buying little things from communities around.
  • Insurance for your travels: have a copy handy, either digitally or as a hard copy.
  • A student card that's still good: if it apply for you, for getting cheaper tickets into Machu Picchu.
Gear and what to wear (think layers).
  • Boots for the hike: they need to be waterproof, support your ankles, and have been worn before to avoid getting blisters.
  • Two pairs of light pants for trekking: made from fabric that dries fast. Pants that zip off into shorts are great.
  • Shirts that draw out sweat: about three or four quick-dry shirts are good. Dont wear cotton shirts, they hold in the wet and make you cold.
  • A puffy jacket: You really need this for the really cold nights when you are at Llulluchapampa and Phuyupatamarca.
  • A jacket that is a middle layer like fleece or thermal: for those mornings that are cool before the sun is out on the path.
  • A rain jacket or waterproof cover: The weather in the forest can change fast, good rain protection is really important.
  • Layers for underneath that keep you warm: These are important for sleeping well at campsites way up high.
  • Hats: one to protect from the sun and another warm one for the night time.
  • Extra socks: about five pairs of wool or other synthetic ones for hiking, to keep your feet nice and dry.
Trekking Gear & Accessories
  • A daypack (around 30 liters) becomes crucial, equipped with a rain cover to stash your water, camera, and everyday necessities.
  • Trekking poles? They are seriously a must have for navigating those gnarly stone descents, especially ones that have rubber tips.
  • A sleeping bag rated for at least $-10?C$ (or $14?F$) is really important.
  • It is suggested to bring a reusable water bottle or perhaps a hydration bladder (think CamelBak) holding 2-3 liters.
  • A headlamp is a non-negotiable item for finding your way around campsites after dark and for that pre dawn trek towards the Sun Gate.
  • A power bank, your portable lifeline, should hold enough juice for 5 days since power is non existent in the mountains.
  • Sunglasses with proper UV protection are a game changer against that intense high altitude radiation.
Personal Care & Health
  • Hygiene items like wet wipes (a lifesaver for those impromptu "trail showers"), toilet paper, and hand sanitizer are incredibly useful.
  • Sunscreen and lip balm, with a high SPF number, are absolutely critical, given the fierce solar radiation you'll face above the tree line.
  • An insect repellent, featuring 30% DEET or more, will keep those bothersome mosquitoes near Wi?ay Wayna at bay.
  • A basic first aid kit is smart to have, packing band-aids (or moleskin for those pesky blisters), altitude pills (soroche), and any personal prescriptions.
  • Earplugs, believe it or not, could make your rest a whole lot better in the communal camping spots.

A note from Southern Peru Explorers: Your porter has a strict weight limit of 7 kg (or 15 lbs) for your gear. This weight limit notably includes your sleeping bag and mat. Just remember to keep everything you might need during the day packed safely within your personal daypack.
