WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING?

Documents & Personal Essentials (Most Important)

  • Original Passport: Mandatory for every checkpoint along the Inca Trail and for entering Machu Picchu. It must match your permit details.
  • Cash: In small denominations (Peruvian soles), snacks along the trail, or souvenirs in Pisac.
  • Travel Insurance: Keep a physical or digital copy of your policy accessible.
  • Emergency Contacts: A written list or saved on your phone for safety.

Clothing & Footwear (Layering System)

  • Hiking Boots: Must be previously "broken in" or used. This is critical to avoid blisters on the 43 km trek.
  • Lightweight Trekking Pants: Preferably quick-drying material (convertible pants are a great option).
  • Moisture-Wicking Shirts: Synthetic or merino wool. Avoid cotton to stay dry and prevent chills.
  • Warm Jacket: Fleece or down jacket for cold nights at Patallacta and Phuyupatamarca.
  • Waterproof Jacket or Rain Poncho: The weather in the cloud forest is unpredictable, even in the dry season.
  • Thermal Clothing (Base Layer): Essential for sleeping comfortably at high-altitude campsites.
  • Sun Hat and Wool Beanie: A cap for sunny days in the Sacred Valley and a warm hat for the cold nights.
  • Gloves and Extra Socks: Wool or synthetic socks to keep your feet dry; light gloves for the early morning starts.

Trekking Gear & Accessories

  • Daypack (25-35L): With a rain cover to carry your water, snacks, and personal items.
  • Trekking Poles: Highly recommended to protect your knees during the steep stone descents on Days 5 and 6.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Or a hydration system (CamelBak) to reduce plastic waste on the trail.
  • Sunglasses: With UV protection for high-altitude radiation.
  • Power Bank: Since there are no charging stations at the campsites.

Personal Care & Health

  • Personal Medication: If you are under any specific medical treatment.
  • Sunscreen & Lip Balm: High SPF is vital as radiation increases with altitude.
  • Insect Repellent: Necessary for the lower altitudes (Day 5 & 6) and the Machu Picchu citadel.
  • Personal Hygiene: Toilet paper, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer.
