Salkantay Route & Highlights

The schedule below is for our 5-Day Trek. Another option is to take our 7 Day combined Inca and Salkantay route, giving you the best of both worlds. Please see Inca Trail to find more information about this, or to compare the two treks please visit Salkantay 5 vs 7 Day. All options start with pick up in Cusco from our private vans, which will then transport you to the start of the trailhead in Sayllapata at an altitude of 3100m / 10,168ft

Schedule

The route is challenging; in order for us to be able to carry our equipment we traditionally not only use porters but a fleet of mules and horses.

Highlights

Mount Salkantay (Nevada Salkantay) & the Mountains Pass – You get to see this awe inspiring Apu up close and personal. First while travelling towards its enticing snowy peak, making your way through the mountains pass at 4,600m. Scaling the pass leads you to vistas of glacial landscapes that you get on no other trek and allows you to traverse the mountain bases. (This pass is only undertaken on the 5 days trek)

Lake Humantay – This majestic Lake has become hugely popular in recent years due to it’s clear blue glacial water and panoramic view. It will be one of the first stops on your trek to take in your surroundings and take pictures before diving into your first days undertaking.

Machu Picchu – Inti Punku (Sungate) and Machu Picchu – The original entrance into the city which sits at 2,720 meters above sea level (8,924 feet). Sitting in the mini terraces at Sungate you will feel on top of the world with that million-dollar shot of the Machu Picchu ruins and Huayna Picchu mountain, where the temple of the moon is located. When the fog lifts you will be treated with your first glimpse of this prestigious 15th century city, knowing you are only 951 feet from descending into its exploration.

Aguas Calientes Often ignored from your mind as a highlight until you reach its bustling hub. With the Urubamba river flowing directly through the town and the grand statues, it has a feel of another time. There is an extensive market which has beautiful souvenirs or gifts to purchase. It is a commotion of noise and excited whilst still acting as a sanctuary of provisions and protection.
