The ONLY way to do Machu Picchu

The only way to do Machu Picchu is through the Inca Trail Trek arriving through the Sun Gate. As we learned from our INCREDIBLE guides James, Will, Eloy, and master planner Joel, everything the Incas did was on purpose. Everything. The Sun Gate was placed at the precise location to invite you into Machu Picchu with the most incredible, breath taking, panoramic view of the citadel in the distance. The Incas didn’t build the bus route that most people take, and if you do, you’ll find that the whole experience is actually underwhelming and overcrowded, because that’s not how the Incas intended for you to arrive. But when you pass through the Sun Gate, you almost wonder if you’re still on planet earth. The experience is so surreal. It’s one of those rare moments in life when the expectations set by photos and other traveler’s stories are actually FAR exceeded. And that’s where I gained a whole new appreciation for the Incas: Machu Picchu was not built to be seen (which is why photos don’t do it justice), but to be experienced in all its splendor, demanding the participation of all your senses, not just your eyes.

But, a lot of work goes into making that moment a reality, which is why I HIGHLY recommend booking with Southern Peru Explorers. James, Willian, and Eloy took care of all the nitty gritty details — over the course of just two days, I had collected six different tickets (one for the train, the trail, the citadel, the bus again, the citadel again, the train again, etc.) — you’d go crazy planning it by yourself! Let the experts take care of the details, because that’s what they do best!

And then, the best part, their expertise of the land, the history, the culture, the Quechua language (the language of the Incas), takes your journey to a whole new level. It adds such valuable context, and entertainment, to every step of the way!

I will definitely be doing this trek again! Thank you, James, Willian, and Eloy, for being the best guides we could have asked for.

Blown away with gratefulness!

Joel and his staff provided us with a 1 night/2 day trip to Machu Pichhu followed by a 1 day hike to Rainbow Mountain. To say I was blown away would be an understatement. The service from start to finish was top notch and we were able to enjoy our experience knowing we were going to be taken care of from a staff, an owner, and guides who genuinely cared about ensuring our experience was unforgettable. At one point during dinner, it started raining cats & dogs and the staff immediately sprang into action to transition our outdoor dinner to under the patio roof, even the owner Joel, which reveals the type of pride and leadership he takes in his company. He is someone who truly cares and hearing the story of how he built his business as well as the information from the knowledgeable and personable guides was the icing on the cake. Thank you Joel and Southern Peru Explorers for making my experience so unforgettable!
