There are literally hundreds of tour companies based in Cusco that will take you on tours of Machu Picchu, treks on the Inca Trail, and visits to dozens of other ancient sites throughout our very special country of Peru.
But few of these tour companies can claim that they are 100% locally owned and operated, with a founder that was born and lived his whole life in Peru. That unique relationship informs every aspect of how Southern Peru Explorers operates, from how the porters are treated to the respect shown to the land, and unique perspective you will get on the history of the Inca people.
That is only the starting point for us. Since your health and safety are our primary concern, we have invested in top-of-the-line equipment from some of the most prestigious names in the camping business. Our chefs, who create one mouth-watering meal after another, will be serving you healthy and locally-sourced food. They maintain the highest standards of cleanliness so you can travel worry-free.
When you book with us, you will have maximum flexibility–whether you book a private tour with two people to as many as 50 or 60. Plus, we have a wide variety of tours to choose from so you get to decide on your destination as well as your date of departure. Moreover, you will be dealing with a highly qualified, dedicated staff–we are proud to boast that they are among the best in the business.
We take you on “the road less traveled” so you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the serenity of the majesty surrounding you. We like to think of ourselves as steadfast stewards of the environment. From our biodegradable toilets to our fanatic attention to leaving no trash behind, we are dedicated to ensuring the land retains its purity so that future generations can enjoy the same incredible experience.
It all comes down to our profound appreciation of the privilege we have of introducing you to extraordinary lands and the people that have inhabited them for centuries. We show that appreciation by our commitment to our community, making sure our employees are well-compensated and treated fairly and giving back through various charity events.
JOEL CARDENAS, FOUNDER
For Joel, Southern Peru Explorers brings together three of the things he values most: exposing others to the astounding natural beauty of Peru, honoring the rich Incan culture of the region, and bringing together people from all over the world for mutual learning and fun.
Joel, who is fluent in Spanish, Quechua, and English, is a graduate of the Universidad San Antonio ABAD, in Cusco, with a degree in tourism. Immediately after graduation, he founded his company with the intention of providing visitors with a distinctly different travel experience, drawing upon his own travels throughout Europe and South America.
Born in the shadow of Machu Picchu, his appreciation of the land dates back to childhood, when he would visit his grandparents home in the mountains. “I loved waking up in the morning to see the snow-capped mountains, the lakes and amazing views,” he recalls. “When participants on our treks are surrounded by beauty, it makes them forget about the stress of everyday life and enjoy each moment.”
As a photographer, who studied at Lima Imagen, he is able to showcase his unique esthetic sense in the company’s videos and vibrant visual images. While nothing can completely capture the arresting beauty participants will see on his company’s tours, he certainly comes close.
